In 2008 the Anglican Communion of the Episcopal Church in the United States voted to split from the Episcopal Church of England. There was a main theological rift that had occurred back in 2003 with the election of the first openly gay bishop. The issue of course, was over the whether or not this election followed along with the doctrine. This would start a theological wound that would expand into the secession. The Archbishop of the new and more global Anglican church would be headed by the Pittsburgh dioceses bishop Duncan. There were a total of nine groups who chose to leave the Episcopal church, which was part of the Church of England, and chose to join a newly formed Anglican Church of North America. This split brought on property deputes as well as personal disputes in the Pittsburgh area.
